The Sorcerers' Stone, Wonderland Logic, etc.
New Things in Time for St. Nicholas's Christmas list
Logic
If your overachieving child has “more school!” on the Christmas list this year, you’ve come to the right place. I’m still taking sign-ups for my spring logic class with Royal Fireworks Academy. RFA is a fabulous online school for gifted children, and my class uses an Alice-in-Wonderland theme to teach classical/syllogistic logic and basic propositional logic. Classes run Tuesday evenings.
Test your (or your child’s) intro logic abilities with a few quizzes from the class:
Latin for the Holy Days
I try really hard to play Latin-language music for my Latin students before class. But - eheu! - do you know how hard it is to find pieces that don’t put everyone to sleep? Hence, I was over the moon that the guys over at Clamavi de Profundis have done Veni, veni Emmanuel, all in Latin, and it’s awesome. All their music has a dwarven-Lord-of-the-Ringsy vibe… which works pretty well for this medieval chant.
Literature
It’s out! My translation of Angelus Silesius’s poems about the sorcerers’ stone is now published. The title is, unsurprisingly, The Sorcerers’ Stone: Alchemical Poems by Angelus Silesius. They’re not just about the stone but also about alchemy and wisdom (since the German phrase for the sorcerers’ stone literally means “the stone of the wise”). Anyway, now you can get your copy in time for the holidays - if that’s the sort of thing you do get for the holidays.
Full cover reveal (since I didn’t do it like a gender reveal three months ago):
